It seems to me to have a religious context. Deep despair & then receiving a revelation from heaven (or getting the revelation & then going into despair).

Yes, it certainly does have a spiritual quality - like you're about to speak in tongues. Or you just might look woeful about an overdue library book... it's hard to tell:)
